As the proliferation of these wind turbines appears on my horizon, herewith another argument to ponder, courtesy of the Telegraph Online:

They are among the nation's wealthiest aristocrats, whose families have protected the British landscape for centuries. Until now that is.

For increasing numbers of the nobility – among them dukes and even a cousin of the Queen – are being tempted by tens of millions of pounds offered by developers to build giant wind farms on their estates.

An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph reveals how generous subsidies – that are added to consumer energy bills – are encouraging hereditary landowners to build turbines up to 410ft tall on their land.

With controversy over onshore wind farms growing, the role of the landed establishment in fuelling the 'scramble for wind' will alarm opponents.

They claim wind farms are blighting the countryside while failing to deliver a reliable supply of electricity despite the cost.

Latest figures show the amount of electricity generated by UK wind farms actually fell last year because of the lowest average wind speeds this century.

However, supporters say a network of wind farms will guarantee Britain cheap, sustainable energy in the future.

The turbines being hosted by the landed gentry are almost always many miles from the aristocrats' own homes. The Duke of Gloucester, who lives in an apartment in Kensington Palace in London, is hoping to build a wind farm 85 miles away on his ancestral estate in Northamptonshire, which he moved out of in 1994. Each turbine could earn the Duke, who is the Queen's cousin, up to £20,000 a year and possibly much more.

It comes as Sir Reginald Sheffield, David Cameron's father-in-law, whose baronetcy was created in the mid 18th century, admitted last week he earns as much as £350,000 a year from eight turbines on his estate at Bagmoor in Lincolnshire.

In a letter last week to the Spectator magazine, Sir Reginald protested that he did not own the turbines on Bagmoor farm and that his estate received only a "modest income" amounting to "less than one tenth" of £3.5 million.

Calculations by an energy think tank suggested Sir Reginald could be receiving about £120,000.

The Duke of Roxburghe has angered locals – including the neighbouring Duke of Northumberland – after winning a lengthy planning and legal battle to build 48 turbines, each about 400ft high, on unspoilt moorland in the Scottish borders.

Construction work began about two months ago with the building of a road 10 miles long through previously pristine countryside to reach the wind farm site.

The Duke, who is worth about £100 million, will reportedly earn as much as £2.5 million a year from the deal although a spokesman, who declined to discuss the actual amount, said that figure was not accurate.

One industry expert said a more realistic figure was in the order of £720,000 a year.

In the course of the 25-year lifespan of the wind farm at Fallago Rig that could net the Duke anywhere between £18 million and £62.5 million.

The details of the deal struck with an energy company remain confidential although The Sunday Telegraph understands the Duke's earnings are performance related – in other words the more the wind blows the more money he will make.

One industry expert estimated Fallago Rig could generate about £875 million income over the next quarter of a century for the Duke and his commercial partner North British Windpower.

Half that sum is in the form of a consumer subsidy, introduced by the last Labour government to encourage renewable energy projects, and which is added on to household electricity bills.

The turbines will not be visible from Floors Castle, the Duke's ancestral home about 25 miles away.

The Duke of Beaufort, who is worth £120 million, is trying to build 19 turbines on land near Swansea – about 100 miles from his family seat at Badminton House in Gloucestershire.

The turbines could generate around £285,000 for the Somerset Trust, which runs his estate. A spokesman last week insisted the Duke of Beaufort would not gain personally from the wind farm.

Meanwhile Earl Spencer, brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, is planning 13 turbines on his Althorp estate, each of which will be more than 410ft high.

The Earl of Seafield, who owns over 100,000 acres making him Britain's seventh largest landowner, has eight turbines on his land in Banffshire generating rental income in the region of £120,000 while the Earl of Moray receives, according to one industry expert, in excess of half a million pounds a year from 36 turbines near Stirling in Scotland.

Fullabrook Down, North Devon

Jeremy Dearden, the Lord of the Manor of Rochdale, a title that once belonged to Lord Byron, was given permission earlier this year for five turbines to be built on Todmorden Moor in Lancashire. Mr Dearden, who lives in New Zealand where he has a farm, stands to earn in the region of £75,000.

A spokesman for Coronation Power, the energy company which rents Mr Dearden's land, said: "When the wind farm enters operation, we will pay the landowner an annual land rental fee based on a percentage of total revenue generated by the wind farm. This figure is based on industry standard fees."

Dr John Constable, director of the Renewable Energy Foundation, a think tank critical of the subsidies for onshore wind farms, and who calculated wind farm income for The Sunday Telegraph, said: "Many of these landowners must know, deep down, that the subsidies are a national scandal, but easy money on this scale would tempt a saint."

Sir Simon Jenkins, chairman of the National Trust but speaking in a personal capacity, said: "The level of subsidy available to landowners to put up these turbines is out of all proportion to the public benefit derived from them and the temptation to ruin what is usually outstanding landscapes is overwhelming. It is a crime against the landscape."

According to local opposition groups, the Duke of Gloucester made farmland close to Barnwell Manor, his former home in Northamptonshire, available to the highest bidder, entering into an agreement with West Coast Energy, a company based in north Wales.

West Coast Energy failed to return calls last week while Buckingham Palace, which handles media inquiries for the Duke, said it was a matter for West Coast Energy.

Peter Stephens, 74, a retired engineer fighting the development, said: "The Duke lives in Kensington Palace and doesn't care if it's spoiling our view. These turbines will be in the wrong place. This has been a completely unchanged vista since the 16th century and he wants to ruin it."

John Elliot, Barnwell's estate manager, rejected claims that the Duke is absent from the site. Mr Elliot said: "He turns up regularly to the estate. He is a very proactive landowner."

The landowners point out that wind turbines not only help to reduce carbon emissions but also benefit the local community while helping to maintain expensive, centuries-old estates.

Sir Alastair Gordon-Cumming, a seventh baronet, who runs the Altyre estate near Inverness, who has been given planning consent for 29 turbines on his land, said the wind farm was the "most exciting thing to happen to the estate" for more than 70 years.

According to industry experts, the wind farm will generate income of about £18.5 million a year, half of it as subsidy. A spokeswoman for the Altyre estate refused to say how much money the estate would receive from the deal but industry experts estimate earnings of more than £400,000 a year, based on a going rate of £15,000 rental income per turbine.

The spokeswoman added: "This wind farm will be built on a huge swathe of hill land which is otherwise redundant, has no value, no income potential, and suddenly by being able to put a wind farm on it ... that will enable him to sustain and maintain the estate for the benefit of the wider community."

I have just discovered the most amazing cafe set high on the cliffs overlooking St Mount's Bay. Known as the Barefoot Kitchen Cafe and Shop...it is idiosyncratic and arty and has the most stupendous views. The Mezze I had for lunch was a mix of mouthwatering delicacies....the kids loved it too, because it has such a relaxed atmosphere. They provide cream teas, coffees, cakes and are about to launch an evening menu. You can walk straight onto the coastal footpath. Barefoot is located at Halzephron House above Gunwalloe on the Lizard Peninsula.

Sojourn in the Peak District - National Cycle Network Route 68

I have just spent a couple of days talking up my Peak District Cycling Map. Visiting my various retail outlets: the National Park Centres, Cotswold Outdoor and other specialist retailers. Mayfield Books of Sheffield do a fine job in placing my maps in the many sale outlets but there is always a job to do, to get around and "Talk Up' the product. I camped beside the High Peak Trail at Hurdlow, enjoying a couple of pints of local ale in the Royal Oak, a perfect spot for those cycling this trail, or for those seeking a small camp site, free of caravans. The cycling couple illustrated below were heading for Berwick-on-Tweed in the borders, and the northern end of NCN 68. Good luck to them!

Is it no wonder that pubs/inns close at a rate of 100+ per week when those in charge have few social skills and can not recognize their regular customers, and fail to greet them with a "Good Evening", or "How Are You"? Living in North Devon one has got used to lack lustre drinking holes. The olde-worlde decor was ripped out in the 60s to cater for the tourists, and so those that are left have little, or no, homely ambience about them. The three inns that I visit regularly: The Rock at Georgeham (bar man never smiles) with an OK ambience, The Kings Arms, Georgeham (proprietor didn't recognize my wife despite having employed my two children) serves up superb Exmoor Beef, and the Grampus Inn, Lee is improving but you wonder if the publican cares whether you give him business or not. What is it with these people? Where is the drive, the enthusiasm, the old-fashioned hospitality. Why do they bother?

King Arthur's Camelot - Tintagel

Tintagel is known across Europe (in especially Germany and Holland) as the ancient site of Camelot. And, has thus become a place of pilgrimage bringing in millions of pounds to the local economy of North Cornwall. A fact ignored by the Cornwall County Council who in their wisdom have closed down the stunning Heritage Centre in Tintagel. That the Tourist Information Centres of Boscastle, Falmouth and Penzance have also closed due to shortage of funds is anethema to me, too, and shows the complete disregard for the future of tourism in the county. Who and what pays these people's salaries? You don't look a Gift Horse in the mouth do you?

Have you been enjoying Channel 4s Camelot on Saturday evenings? I believe filmed in Ireland, and not, sadly in North Cornwall.

Cumbria is another county that has closed down all but one of the National Park Centres....They blame it all on the internet....but as we know. It is difficult to find quality, reliable information that has not been parley to heavy advertising....Comments, please.

A Literary Pilgrimage across the Cotswolds

Last week I had a chance meeting with the Earl of Wemyss at Stanway. Stanway is my favourite Cotswold house and has been host to JM Barrie of Peter Pan fame, who instigated the build of the thatched cricket pavilion. HG Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle were keen players of the game. Wells, of course, was noted for bowling a maiden over... The Earl was kind and enthusiastic about my recent book, The Cotswold Collection, and we shared a great fondness for Patrick (Paddy) Leigh Fermor who had died a fortnight before. We discovered that he had been buried on the 16th and that a Memorial Service is planned for November in St James' Piccadilly. I, then moved on towards a meeting at Snowhill where I soon passed Broadway Tower home to William Morris. Not that I have ever read any of his books. I have admired his artworks and legion for hard work.

My route was soon Cheltenham bound. I noticed a sign for Dumbleton, (Paddy's home when in England)....and turned East. On entering the church gate his grave mound was clearly visible, covered in flowers with many notes of appreciation and love, from far and wide: Byronic, Hellenic and Greek Societies, and Cretan friends. A moment to savour his influence on my life. In 1977, at the age of 26 I bought a First Edition of his "A Time of Gifts" and was captivated by his trek across Holland and mittel-Europe to Constantinopel in the 1930s....Two years later, in 1979, I had resigned my job with a London publishing house and had set out too, to walk across Europe to Greece. My route was to take me through France, over the Alps into Italy, and eventually to Greece....My other influence was to be Laurie Lee. His "As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning" had romanticised my idea of a long walk, and homeward that same evening I stopped off at the Woolpack in Slad for a pint of Gloucester Old Spot.

I had got to know Laurie a little on his infrequent visits to Sheepscombe's cricket field. His sight was poor and his hearing no better but Cathy (with thighs like hams - see "A Rose For Winter") was his mouthpiece. The Woolpack was a disappointment. No papers or friends of yesteryear about. Just the usual pub boors outside guffawing, and in the bar, the ghost of Laurie, and an empty space awaiting to be filled by the local celebs, Keith Allen and Damien Hirst. I moved on, not keen to meet these two, and sort out Laurie's grave, opposite. Still the mound stood tall with a few flowers over his remains. The stoney soil had not settled these past 12-years. It was as if he had been buried yesterday.

All lovers of travel writing will be mourning the death last Friday of Paddy, "The Greatest Living Englishman", and considered the finest travel writer in the English Language. He was, indeed, an inspiration to a host of writers, adventurers and Hellenists, and especially to me. His "A Time Of Gifts" published in 1977 described his journey on foot from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople, by way of the Rhine and Danube, and mittel-Europe during the mid 30s, struck such a chord with me that I gave up my job with a London publishing house in 1979 to pursue my own dream, to walk across France-The Alps into Italy, to Greece...

The experience sparked my interest in maps and travel guides....and the idea of Goldeneye was born.

I have often been asked to write about my walk, but such has been my respect, nay awe, of Paddy's travel writing that "Just to try would be foolish....I could not hope to match such erudition and brilliance," for I have always considered great travel writing to be the most difficult of prose styles to achieve....Laurie Lee managed it, but he was a poet, as did Lawrence Durrell, another inspiration, and friend to Paddy.

Paddy lived in the Southern Pelepponese, but whilst in England at Dumbleton, Worcestershire. I know it well having played cricket there many times...I never knew this was his home, and I wonder if I would have made a fool of myself if I had dropped by?

If you seek luxurious accommodation then try the Lower Slaughter Manor, or for a few less pence, the Washbourne Court, opposite. Lower Slaughter can be the Start of an interesting circular walk...

Heddon Valley - The Most Beautiful Valley in England?

At this time of year there are few places more beautiful. As you descend from Trentishoe Down, below you is a a carpet of lush greenery. An abundance of trees and a swift-flowing stream with richly patterned moss and delicate leaves left awash in the currents. Trout dart about in the shadows.

In the midst of this valley is the Hunter's Inn. This could surely be one of the top destinations in England. Originally designed as a hunting lodge of Swiss/Bavarian proportions. Sadly, all the original features are long gone; the Stag's Head, the cane fishing rods in their cases, the old maps, the old leather chairs, the comforts of an ancient hostelry...have all been ripped out years ago by idiots with no understanding of the Good Things in Life. I have long thought that you would need millions to get this place back on the map...

The new owners have started the process, and good luck to them. The exterior has been painted and a massive window overlooks the beautiful (often forgotten) rear gardens. But, please burn the bar's carpet and lay bare the floor boards, and let us have some stunning paintings on view. Perhaps, the minimalist approach is the best way forward?

It often amazes me that hotels are bought and run by people with no sense of style or taste...Comments, please.

It's all in the preparation. I had organized for two keen bikers to be my models for the day but as the day dawned they couldn't make it. The weather was forecast to be bright and sunny. I had to go and hope for the best and to seek out bikers on the trail....As it turned out, I soon came across three pairs of happy cyclists riding the Bibury Circuit. Who could imagine that a stinging nettle could have made the difference between meeting Prince William and his fiance, Kate. Whilst on the coastal footpath last week our walk was severely curtailed when my 6-year trod on a stinging nettle. Such was the fuss that we returned to Hartland Quay. If we had continued along the path we may well have met up with the two Romantics who were staying (such were the rumours) in a cottage belonging to the Stucleys. We shall never know!

It's his big week so I thought I would tell you a few things about our future King....

Tetbury was almost unheard of until his Father moved in to Highgrove a couple of miles to the south of Tetbury. William is a mad motorcyclist and is often seen burning off rubber with a PC in tow. Here I spied him having a rest.

He also loves to surf, and like all trendy fellows is mad about VW camper vans. I spied this one at Doughton hidden away in a barn opposite his Dad's home.

But, like all true-blue Royals it is to the "Sport of Kings" that he is most attached: Polo. And, he can get into all sorts of trouble....

But, it is to Kate that he has lost his spurs to, and good luck to you, Sir.....and may I wish you many years of happiness...

This was the first Map-Guide I produced that has now evolved into a much more sophisticated design, but the concept remains the same; to combine a leisure map with a travel guide. At the time, 25+ years ago, map publishers were only printing on one side of the paper. That seemed ridiculous to me, and an opportunity was born. To produce a double-sided map that pertained to be a map and guide in one. I developed the series with Goldeneye to cover most of UK's major tourist regions. Since the onset of digital and free info the series has been culled and only the better sellers remain in print.

The Cotswolds Map-Guide has always been the best-seller....and from this acorn have developed my other Cotswold publications resulting in "The Cotswold Collection" launched last November.

I must now up-date the Goldeneye website....

The Aliens of Fullabrook Down

From the window of my cottage I can see strange shapes appearing day by day. Three miles, as the crow flies, the horizon's flat shape is changing into a tower of obelisk proportions. At first, a monolith, soon joined by massive wings, and now today the wings are threefold. Put together with the ease of an Airfix model. Giant propellers front this beast, put there to collect the wind to heat and light our homes...

I was curious, so I set off on my motorcycle to see for myself what these gigantic objects looked like close up, and, on my travels would I come across anyone who had an opinion on these turbines, or any scientific knowledge about the uses, potential and merits of this phenomena? In fact, I did, by a strange chance, meet the very man responsible for initiating, and or, designing these wind turbines, and our conversation was most enlightening and carried out in a friendly manner. He informed me that he had worked at Sellafield (Windscale) and the Hinckley Point Nuclear Power Stations, and had put forward his plans for this alternative energy site some 23-years ago! The constant litigation had ruined him and he had lost most of his friends. Politicians encouraged him to pursue his plans but when it came to the crunch (election time) they had turned their backs on him. What had he learnt from all of this: "The cussedness of human nature..." He has nothing to gain from this but the knowledge that his obstinacy and self-belief realized his dream, or the beginning of a nightmare in the countryside. There is of course, another side as well if you read the endless Blogs and Comments on Google, the proposals made by the National Parks, and the like.

In this climate of political spin, questionable scientific data and spivs seeking the Main Chance. What truth can we expect from our local and national politicians and do they represent our interests, or are they too, smitten, seduced by the riches of political endeavour? Perhaps, we are ourselves to blame for being too passive, for not following our passions, our instincts? Should we take to the streets and protest...?

Surely we all realize (after seeing the horrific events in Japan) that we need an alternative to Nuclear Power? What cost must we put up with to realize constant energy? A few wind turbines on the skyline that interrupts our view of this "green and pleasant land" is surely worth the sacrifice to bring warmth and light into our homes?

Is it not a beautiful object? Some aesthetes would argue that it is indeed fine and true, and clean and forthright. An architectural monument of perfection. Others would say it is a "Blot On The Landscape".

Whatever our opinion (which rarely counts for anything) these 23-24 objects are here to stay, and stay they will across a very wide area. I am told there are at least 6 farms involved, and all will merrily be counting the pound notes, very soon....and, there are quiet rumours that "Land Fill" is a future option, too.

But, the debate goes further and way beyond the windswept hills of Fullabrook Down. Does the government have any clear policy on Alternative Energy? The Tidal, Hydro-Electric, Hydro Genetic solutions, Thermal and Pulse Energy sources have been largely ignored by the bureaucrats and financiers. The oil and nuclear (read Military) lobbyists continue to win the day. Why would the Treasury risk loosing millions of pounds worth of revenue to Hydogen generated vehicles (designed 50 years ago) and other "silly" ideas? And, are we naive to believe that sense will prevail? All eyes will be on Japan - How will they deal with the alternatives? You can bet that human ingenuity will determine a way to overcome these problems but how long before the Chaos Theory prevails, and in effect do these objects not resemble Butterflies?

I am told nothing grows beneath these, and for this strange reason the National Trust are destroying these magnificent plants in their hundreds. Is this Control Freakery gone too far? When is a weed, not a weed? When it sits undisturbed amongst your borders without an invitation. Walk slowly around Marwood..... and the spirit of James Smart lives on. You are in the presence of a Visionary, a Master Painter, a man of passion, and a man who couldn't give a damn about pleasing the world. It is quirky, imaginative and his. It is not all controlled borders with B&Q edging. There are weeds and rough patches, and long vistas, and sudden surprises but it is all yours to meld into, and with a bit of nerve and hard work you could use Marwood's example to transform your own garden. So be with good cheer and get down to North Devon.

Marwood Hill Gardens - A Ray of Brilliance in a Spring Landscape

On my travels, it is too rare a moment to come across a place that has been created with passion and such verve, that one is thrown into a state of awe and humility....Dr James Smart (now deceased) created this garden out of a barren hillside in North Devon. He arrived here in 1949 and it took him some 50-years to realize a dream where you can now experience his famous collection of camellias - the largest in the country, and a rare collection of rhododendrons (to be featured next week). There is a large bog garden, lakes, clematis, a Rock and Alpine garden, and a Nursery selling unusual plants. The garden is open daily from 1 March to 31st October, 10-5. Tearoom, too for refreshments.

All these images were taken on a dull, grey morning. You don't need bright sunshine for flower photography, just a tripod, but be prepared for grubby knees!

Don't drive away if you find it difficult to park, be persistent and find a spot. If you have any influence with the Church Commissioners, please demand to know why they don't allow the visitors to park in the field belonging to the adjacent church. Our pleas for a response has been continually ignored, after all, the garden has had planning permission for three years!

Marazion Exhibition

A friend of mine, Sara Brittain is holding an exhibition in Marazion, and it looks just amazing. So, if you are in Cornwall today, or are planning a trip very soon, get down to lovely Marazion just opposite St Michael's Mount (that fairytale castle that sticks out in the sea opposite Penzance), and bathe in some Cornish Art....and live the Life Fantastic.

Cornwall Contemporary in Penzance is Sara's gallery and they are staging a special, one-off mixed exhibition at Ebenezer Chapel in Marazion over this Easter. Sara Writes:

"I was approached by Lesley Price, the owner of Ebenezer Chapel, to stage an exhibition there and I have always been interested in presenting work out of the gallery environment. The chapel has been beautifully converted into a large, spacious, modernist building and it is the perfect backdrop to the stunning work in this exhibition. The two large canvases by Paul Wadsworth look particularly fantastic and I think this exhibition offers potential investors in art, the chance to see how a painting fits into a home, rather than on a gallery wall."

Artists in the exhibition include Jessica Cooper, Shirley Foote, Paul Lewin, Aladair Lindsay, Janet Lynch, Maggie Matthews, Emma McClure, Fiona Millais, Nancy Pickard, Neil Pinkett, Paul Wadsworth, Peter Wray and Judy Collins.

Ebenezer Chapel can be found on the left of the main road as you approach Marazion from the A30 and Penzance, just before the Godolphin Arms Hotel and the exhibition is open every day until Monday 25th April from 11am - 6pm.

A Trip Around The Lakes, My Favourite Lakes

Given the price of fuel you will want your money's worth when on an afternoon's drive around the Lake District. The Lakes illustrated below have such intense moments of beauty that you will be left spellbound. But, take your time, and perhaps your journey will turn into some long, lazy days rather than a manic rally.

Buttermere is a gem. There's a cracking ice cream shop in the village worth visiting before you tackle the circular walk around the lake, and then around the corner is Crummock Water, often forgotten...

Crummock Water is surrounded by mountains, and is in the centre of fine walking country

Derwent Water is the "Queen of the Lakes" and is surrounded by majestic mountains. No doubt to be visited soon by William and Kate?

Dear old Elterwater, best seen on a frosty morn. Just stunning...

Loweswater is often forgotten because of its remoteness, and it is therefore a good reason to visit for there is a very fine inn nearby and you can cycle around the lake, too

Rydal Water from a viewpoint familiar to the infamous Thomas de Quincy, considered the greatest prose writer of his Age but sadly only remembered for his ill-spent youth, not his fine intellect and great friendship

Wast Water, the most dramatic, the deepest, the moodiest and most awesome of all the lakes. A trip up the west side will bring you to Wasdale Head, home of a fine inn and a little camp site where you can rest your weary limbs and enjoy the famous Cumbrian hospitality. Bravo.

BURFORD – TAYNTON – BARRINGTONS – SHERBORNE – NORTHLEACH – HAZLETON – WITHINGTON – CHEDWORTH – FOSSEBRIDGE - COLN ST DENNIS – ABLINGTON – BIBURY - COLN ST ALDWYNS - EASTLEACH-SOUTHROP - FILKINS-SHILTON - SWINBROOK-BURFORD

ABOUT 60 MILES

This route follows two small river valleys which feed the River Thames; the Rivers Windrush (Sherborne Brook) and Coln. The landscape is rich in imagery rolling, galloping country”, dry-stone walls dividing sweeping sheep pastures, trickling trout streams and quaint hamlets undisturbed by coach, sightseer or time itself. The villages en route are fine examples of the English domestic architecture so typifical of the Cotswolds.

DIRECTIONS MILES (APPROX) – Between Centres

BURFORD. Pass through traffic lights, and over River Windrush at the bottom of the High Street, L at mini-roundabout (SP Stow), then in 150 yards left again (SP Taynton). 1.5

TAYNTON. Straight on.

2 GREAT BARRINGTON. Turn L at War Memorial, and downhill to River Windrush. (Detour L after Fox Inn for Little Barrington). Route continues R after Fox Inn for

1 WINDRUSH. Bear R at Village Green opposite Church.

1.5 SHERBORNE. Straight through to, and over, X-rds (SP Farmington). Route runs beside picturesque wooded valley.

3 FARMINGTON. Pass church and bear L at Village Green (Memorial) (SP Northleach/Turkdean).

1.6 NORTHLEACH. Turn R at T-junction (SP Cirencester), continue along High Street to traffic lights, and turn R (SP Stow/Cheltenham), then almost immediately L (SP Hampnett).

1.3 HAMPNETT. Straight through. Shortly reach A40 X-rds, directly over and immediately L (SP Hazleton).

2 HAZLETON. L at T-junction, and bear L through village. At A40 junction, turn R (SP Cheltenham), then immediately L (SP Compton Abdale/Withington).

1.7 COMPTON ABDALE. Turn R at T- junction (SP Withington/Chedworth), and bear L at fork (SP Withington).

2 WITHINGTON. Enter village, and take first L turn (SP Roman Villa/Yanworth), or continue into village for the Mill Inn and church. In 1 mile pass beside Cassey Compton farm on LHS. Then shortly, straight over X-rds. In 11/2 miles the road swings left and ascends to Yanworth (Turn R here for detour to Roman Villa).

5 YANWORTH. Just before entering village turn R (SP Fossebridge), and in 1 mile turn R at X-rds (SP Chedworth).

1.5 CHEDWORTH. Into village. Turn L (SP Lower Chedworth) after the Seven Tuns Inn, and after a few hundred yards bear L at fork. Shortly to bear L at telephone box (SP Yanworth). In 1 mile, turn R at T-junction (SP Fossebridge).

3.5 FOSSEBRIDGE. Turn L at T-junction (A429), then almost immediately R (SP Coln St Dennis). Hazardous junction. Good pub. After 400 yards bear R at junction (SP Coln St Dennis). Straight through Coln St Dennis bearing R at church. And straight through Coln Rogers. 2.5

WINSON. Turn L at junction (SP Bibury).

1.5 ABLINGTON. On outskirts of village turn L at junction (SP Ablington/Bibury). Continue through, bearing R at T-junction (SP Bibury).

1.5 BIBURY. Bear L at Swan Hotel. In 1/2 mile, turn R on sharp bend (SP Coln St Aldwyn). In 2 miles, turn R at T-junction.

2.5 COLN ST ALDWYNS. Bear L at X-rds to continue route (SP Hatherop). (Straight over X-rds for village pub, recce of village and meandering River Coln).

2 HATHEROP. Turn L at T-junction (SP Westwell/Burford). In 1 1/2 miles on LHS Macaroni Downs, and shortly bear R (SP Eastleach), and R again in 1/4 mile. Continue for a further 1/2 mile, then turn L (SP Eastleach).

4 EASTLEACH. Straight through. Victoria Inn on LHS. Cross the River Leach and turn R at church (SP Southrop). After 1 mile, bear R at fork (SP Southrop).

2 SOUTHROP. On outskirts of village the route bears L (SP Filkins), (turn R here to explore Southrop). In 2 miles, turn L at X- rds (A361), then almost immediately R (SP Filkins).

4 FILKINS. Straight through until you reach the main road (A361). Turn R (SP Burford). In 2 miles, turn R at X-rds (SP Shilton) (or turn L for the Cotswold Wildlife Park).

5 SHILTON. Straight through. Rose & Crown Inn. At end of village, over X-rds (Unsigned). In 1 1/2 miles, turn L at T- junction (SP Swinbrook/Witney). In 1/4 mile, a major T-junction (A40). Turn R, and in 1 mile, L then L again. Straight through Asthall. In 1 mile, X-rds, (detour R for Swinbrook village and The Swan Inn) continue straight over for Burford. In 1 mile, the road has a right of way from the L, bear R here (SP Burford).

8 BURFORD. Turn R at T-junction and continue down High Street to traffic lights and River Windrush.

This must be the most difficult sport I have ever attempted. You can not hope to begin without a modicum of fitness, and a deep reverence and respect, nay awe, of the sea. A Spring Walk

I was dragged away from my house painting to accompany my three girls on this beautiful afternoon walk. We spied a new badger hole, two hares across a field, a common orchid, a bumble-bee, and in the wood, a profusion of daffodils. Our chatter startled a woodcock. The prize went to the row of oak trees, so splendid in all their finery and awkward shapes. Coming home along the back roads we looked out across Saunton towards Hartland Point.

Cornish Harbours

I have already illustrated the beaches and gardens of Cornwall. All worthy places to make a special visit, but nowhere in the UK are the harbours so special as those in Cornwall. The noise of the gulls, the activity of the fisherman and the visitors makes for amusing "People Watching", and of course there is the fresh seafood....and the pubs littered with wonderful old photographs of times gone by. Later, I shall be recommending places to stay and eat, but for now just take in the photographs and imagine you are sitting beside the quayside... Bring on the summer!

Spring Flowers Burst Through

At last some evidence that the long winter is almost over. On a visit this morning to Lee on the North Devon coast I witnessed many wild flowers in bloom. Lee has a micro-climate similar to the Isles of Scilly and is usually at least 2 weeks ahead of the rest of the UK.

Must be one of the most beautiful combes in England. Always a pleasure to wander through the village and onto the beach, a haven of rock pools and other delights. For a welcome pint and some excellent inn food, I recommend The Grampus.

The Tapestry and Textures of Woodland

The way home....

A big depression came over us in the night emptying clouds of rain. The woodland appeared cleansed and fresh. The ferns had been flattened but the moss was richly textured, and after the cold days of winter the breeze was warm and welcoming, and the green shoots of spring were fighting to stand up through the detritus of autumnal leaves.

Here at Buckland Barton, like so many other woodlands in Britain, it is a pleasure to get out and walk amidst the trees and broken branches, to peer into the detail of the bark and moss, as all about one is evidence of another new year of growth and colour as we welcome Spring to the countryside.

You have always had a hankering for Cornwall, and a soft spot for Poldark (or was it Robin Ellis...Angharad Rees)....so why not head south-west for some fun, great food and wine, comfy beds and a stunning stretch of the coastal footpath.....and you remember you are still owed 4 days holiday, and that runs out in April.

May I suggest you stop over at sexy Halzephron House http://www.halzephronhouse.co.uk/ and book in to their Cabin. Cosy and romantic, and overlooking a mind-blowing stretch of coastline. You can wake late, and head out of your backdoor along the path to Kynance Cove. A magical cove. If you miss it go there later for supper.

West Country Cycling Trails

Now that the days are becoming warmer, and the evenings longer, there is nothing so rewarding as an easy ride on two wheels. Both these routes are anything but strenuous, and you will be amazed at the sensational views at the early light of day and at dusk, especially at mid to low tide when the sand banks come into view. It is possible to hire bikes but better, and more comfortable to bring your own.

The Camel Trail is the most cycled route in Britain. A mere 11-miles from Bodmin to Padstow with the extension to Poleys Bridge being recommended. The Trail is suitable and popular with joggers, walkers and cyclists. It is quite a sight watching elderly Gentleman and Ladies of Means attempting to mount a bicycle for (what appears the first time) many years with all the enthusiasm of their grandchildren. Seeing them wobbling off down the Trail with whoops of delight raises a smile, and a knowing nod. The sad thing is that very few actually go beyond this trail to explore the surrounding Cornish countryside. The cycle hire places do not encourage this

but are just happy to take your cash as if its a merry-go-round at the local fair. Is this experience to be "Something To Do" between the bars of Rock and Dinner at Steins, or will the pleasure lead to more.....?

If this rocks your boat, then try the Tarka Trail (more demanding), or the Granite Way, that runs along the northern borders of Dartmoor.

The Tarka Trail (cycling route section) is a dual-purpose walkway-cycleway allowing for relatively easy and safe cycling starting from Braunton (Tarka Cycle Hire). The route runs on tarmac beside the Taw Estuary to Barnstaple, and can be enjoyed depending on the wind direction. Just hope (to god) it follows you otherwise you may be in for a hard trawl. There is abundant wildlife to hold your interest. The route continuing from Barnstaple along the south side of the Taw Estuary is arguably the least interesting section. A bit of a slog. Luckily, the station cafe at Fremington (Cycle Hire) has just opened so be advised to break here for refreshments. On reaching Instow you must make a difficult choice, either to stop off at the Instow Arms http://www.instowarms.com/ for a coffee or pub lunch, or be dazzled by the delicacies and baguettes at John's Deli in Instow. Moving on. The route becomes more interesting as it enters the Torridge Valley to the Puffing Billy pub (Cycle Hire) below Great Torrington, to cross the river to Watergate Bridge, the trail joins a bridle path, and what follows, is in my opinion, the most interesting section. A few steep bits, sylvan woodland, sculptures and varying flowers and wildlife to hold your interest. It is cyclable on a hybrid, touring or folding bike all the way to Meeth. Look out for the excellent, little cafe at Yard, the Railway summit, where they serve hot soup, coffees and homemade cakes. Rest here awhile to read The Guardian and the arts notices. Or, book in to the bunkhouse and camping spot. Bliss. So, there you have 32 miles of traffic-free cycling suitable for all ages. Go for it! Cornwall Contemporary Art

Visitors flock to St Ives to visit the Tate overlooking Porthmeor Beach which is worth the visit just for the view from the café. If you have time, do go on to the Barbara Hepworth Museum, brilliant, and the Leach Pottery (where it all began, where what began you may ask - The Leach Dynasty of potters). All fine men and true. What is surprising is the lack of quality galleries in St Ives. One comes across amateur-looking studios and gift shops plying repro-prints and calling them Originals! The best, by far is The Millenium Gallery, opposite the Tourist Information Centre. For my money you must move on to Penzance and Newlyn if you need to cover wall space with pictures, alcoves with sculpture and ceramics, fingers and necks with jewellery. The most pro-active gallery or the one that is constantly in contact with me is Cornwall Contemporary run by the charming Ms Sara Brittain, and around the corner to complement her, you have the Stoneman Gallery. Newlyn has Badcocks, run by real enthusiasts, and over the bridge the Newlyn Art Gallery, a supporter of Installation Art, not my thing but if you like looking over rows of matchsticks (laboriously placed in patterns) or something similar, go for it.

There are other centres of Art, usually in locations out of the way, or where there is cheaper housing like St Just-in-Penwith and St Agnes. Unless you have made-it, you won’t find many artists living in the Lamorna Valley like the leading figures of the Newlyn School, Stanhope Forbes and Lamorna Birch.

Fruits of the Sea

One of the most enjoyable features of photography is its unpredictability, and the full range of humanity that falls within one's viewfinder (some are completely off the wall, while others are a complete joy) and the unusual situations, or strange predicaments that arise. You never, ever know what is around the corner....and, it is rarely the human experience that lets you down, more likely a technical hitch with one's equipment. The sea creatures below had put up a fight with an adversary before I came along....the Bass and Gurnard, I spied in the Newlyn Fish Market, whilst the Mackerel were being off-loaded onto the quay at St Ives, and I was given a mere 20 seconds to get the picture before being pushed aside by an impatient fisherman. The lobster, a glorious creature, a Lord of his environment, gave me a run for my money.

Never work with children or animals, is a common refrain for many professionals - not least cameramen. My proof-reader’s brother farmed lobsters at Curgurrel near Portscatho, and I took advantage of this to get up close, and personal, with my lobster. We chose the finest specimen from their fish tank, cut the restraining bands around its claws, and placed it in the light with the camera a few inches from the lobster…then, snap, snap… went the massive claws. The beautiful creature was not going to cooperate. Fortunately, quick thinking and nerves of steel, saved the day. Or should I say, a spray of cold water to calm the lobster, and a sturdy tripod, to calm the cameraman. At last, I had my lobster, in the can! Is he not magnificent?

Cornwall's Beaches and Gardens

Cornwall's beaches are beyond compare...unless, one includes the white sands of North West Scotland. Little wonder that for generations, families have made Cornwall the Number One destination for their annual family holiday. But, why wait for July and August? When you can surf throughout the year, and walk the coastal footpath all year, too. The pubs and restaurants stay open, so do most of the B&Bs and hotels.

In recent years Gardens have become quite an attraction, and the season starts in ernest in February with the snowdrops, crocuses, camellias etc.

I have illustrated a montage of gardens, and these are a taster. Later, in the year I'll provide more details of each one.

London Sights Galore

The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards

For a bit of fun, I thought I would illustrate some of the cliched images of London that the hagged tourist may encounter. The Changing of the Guard and other iconic daily events. When I look back on my youth's ambitions it was never to be a train driver or astronaut but a Horse Guard. I loved the sparkling and shiny boots, and the plumed helemts. The ambition lasted until the day I was thrown off a pony and stamped on narrowly missing my testicles!

London will be an ambitious and on-going project to deliver on this Blog. I will illustrate the Villages of London; Chiswick, Hampstead, Kew, Wimbledon etc and value-for-money accommodation, as well as the quirkier sides of this great City. This is just a starter...

Cotswold Weekend Breaks

Take a look at the map of England and within the triangle created by Bath, Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon lies the Cotswold Hills. One of the great attractions of the Cotswolds are their accessibility. Two hours from London, Manchester and the South Coast, and a short distance from Birmingham, Bristol, Swindon, the Thames Valley corridor. Perfect for a day's visit, better for a short break, or long weekend. And, with half-term on the horizon there is an abundance of attractions on offer. Whether it be the Cotswold Farm Park, and their Spring Lambs, the Cotswold Wildlife Park near Burford, or the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. For those seeking an easy stroll followed by a cream tea, or a pint of ale, none better than to visit one or two scenic villages; starting with Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford and Chipping Campden. For the more energetic, a jaunt along the Cotswold Way. The choice is yours.

If it is architecture that takes your fancy, look to magnificent Gloucester Cathedral, or Tewkesbury Abbey. For the less ambitious, try one of the famous "Wool" churches; Burford, Chipping Campden, Cirencester, Fairford and Northleach.....the country houses of Blenheim, Chastleton and Stanway....

For food and fine ales, the choice is endless. Few regions of England have so many gastro-dining pubs. There appears to be one in every village. I suggest you seek them out with a little help from Goldeneye's The Cotswold Guidebook @ £12.99. Money never better spent.

For the shopaholics, or those in need of stimulation from fine design, and the bright lights, take a bearing and head for Bath or Cheltenham. Two Regency towns with a host of independent retailers and civilised places to window shop, eat and drink. So Bon Appetit!

National Cycle Network - Sustrans

On my morning jog I came across the extension of the NCN Route 27 being widened by the North Devon Council. Lots of squidgy mud and thick tyre tracks left by the dumper truck blurred by visions of happy, smiling families cycling through this sylvan wood. Just hope a burst of heavy rainfall won't wash away this path like it did to the adjacent route to Upcott? This cycle path runs from the edge of Buckland Barton to Knowle, running parallel with the former Braunton to Ilfracombe railway line. It joins the Tarka Trail at Braunton. The National Cycle Network is the organization behind the multitude of cycle paths that criss-cross our beautiful land. Many are traffic-free, but most of the routes run on quiet country lanes, old railway paths and bridle paths. The NCN was the brainchild of John Grimshaw and his merry band of friends....a group of enthusiasts who in my humble opinion have not received the honours they so richly deserve. My interest in all of this is a professional one because for the past 15 years I have been producing cycling maps, for the on, and off-road, fraternity.

February Snowdrops

Snowdrops in Lee, North Devon

Its the time of year when coach loads of garden nuts go out in search of snowdrops, and there is no better place then the Rococo Gardens of Painswick House, managed by my old friend Tim. He has been nurturing with steadfast patience this old garden back to life. It has taken years. I have featured their snowdrops in my new book "The Cotswold Collection" but I have to admit that it was not an easy shot to do. Likewise, I also find a carpet of bluebells tricky to photograph. Far better to have a macro close-up with some misty moisture and rain drops.

Another house well endowed with snowdrops is the Elwes home in Colesbourne open for the odd weekend. The Churn Valley must be one of the most enchanting valleys in England that connects Cheltenham with Cirencester. A fast and dangerous road - I should know. I have had two accidents on it. So, please take care.

It is my intention, nature permitting, to feature a new plant in bloom every week. I have spied some crocuses that await my shutter and lens, and then the following week we should be well in to Daffodil time.
